A dog is man’s best friend. A dog is also a horse’s best friend. The horse is a pack animal and generally prefers the company of other animals. A dog is a wonderful companion for a horse.
The practice of providing race horses with companion animals has been going on for hundreds of years, and continues to be widespread. Horses bond well with other animals and can become deeply attached to their companions. When these familiar animals are removed, the horse can become quite stressed.
There are many aspects to getting a good horse ready for a race. Maintaining a comfortable and happy environment, even while on the road, is important to maximise performance. Companion dogs are often a horse’s best friend in these times of need.
This companion can make a difference to a horse winning a race or otherwise. In this case a dog can be a punter’s best friend.
“I have been following horse racing for over 20 years and some horses seem to go better with a four-legged friend in tow. Maybe this has been Bart’s secret all the time,” laughs Dr Peter Higgins, Dogs NSW Spokesman and Veterinarian.
Dogs have been associated with working horses as well as racing ones. When firehorses pulled the fire engines through the streets in pursuit of a fire, Dalmatians were never far away. These intelligent dogs became closely linked with the fire horses and fire engine. The dog was easily trained to run around the horses, clearing a path and ensuring that other dogs stayed away. The Dalmation has remained a mascot at a fire house, despite the departure
of the horses.
Dogs who work with horses sleep with horses, as they are very compatible and form a strong relationship. A horse works better with a dog around. Some famous race horses have slept with dogs for companionship.
Perhaps when the horses parade before a big race, we should be looking for their companion animals.
