Pet loving allergy sufferers breathe a sigh of relief

Pets are commonly seen as a culpable source of allergens, and a majority of allergy sufferers simply do not entertain the possibility of owning dogs. The good news for the one in four Australians suffering allergies is that there are a number of solutions available allowing them to live comfortably with canine companions.

“Allergic reactions to dogs are caused by certain proteins found in dogs’ hair follicles and dander.”, explains Veterinary Adviser and Dogs NSW Spokesman, Bichon_Frise_Cabal_Candids_low

Dr Peter Higgins.

“This means that the production of dog allergens, and their propensity for being spread, varies quite a lot between breeds.” For these reasons, some breeds prove much more tolerable to allergy sufferers.

Dr Higgins is quick to point out that no canine is completely non-allergenic. However, there are some breeds that are classified as hypoallergenic. Dogs such as Poodles, Schnauzers, Bichon Frise, Chinese Crested Dogs, Irish Water Spaniels, Australian Silky Terriers, Italian Greyhounds, Maltese, Yorkshire Terriers and Skye Terriers are preferential pets for allergy sufferers.

For many allergy sufferers pets are an integral part of life, and total avoidance of dogs is neither a desirable nor a realistic option. By implementing basic allergy management strategies, taking time to research and select an agreeable breed and providing proper care and training, all owners can minimise their sensitivities to triggering allergens.

“First and foremost, regular bathing is ideal for removing dander and other airborne allergens, like pollen and dust stored in dogs’ coats. Mild shampoos prevent skin over drying and decelerate shedding. Fatty Acid dietary supplements enhance the overall health of the skin and coat.”, advises Dr Higgins.

“Establishing at least one dog free room in the house, particularly a bedroom or carpeted room, using vacuum and air filters, airing out the house by opening windows, using allergy resistant bed linen and pillows, washable car-seat covers, and common-sense cleaning. These simple procedures will prevent allergens recycling throughout the home.”

Dogs NSW reassures allergy sufferers that they can still own and loveLagotto-Romagnolo a dog, and share the wider health related benefits by the ways that dogs enrich lives.
