Doty winner casualOn Saturday evening 28 January 2017, the Dogs NSW Complex Fundraising Committee and our major sponsor Royal Canin, hosted one of the premier events on the NSW Show Calendar – the NSW Show Dog, Puppy and Neuter of the Year. This event allows NSW exhibitors to celebrate their dog’s success from the previous year and catch up with friends and fellow exhibitors.

An exciting development was having a reporter and camera crew from the Channel 7 Sunrise program in attendance. They interviewed exhibitors, judges and MC Don Day and filmed dogs being prepared for the ring, as well as being exhibited.

The following morning, the winner of Show Dog of the Year, Keeshond “Bolte” and owner/handler Katrina Santas joined the Sunrise crew in Martin Place in the centre of Sydney. The segment that was aired was upbeat and a great showcase of our dog world. To view the segment go to: Channel 7 Sunrise coverage

As the event has grown, maintaining excitement for exhibitors and spectators, whilst finishing the night in a timely fashion, is always a challenge. This year the Committee modified the format, running the Heats in three rings, hence using nine judges, then proceeding to a “Round of 32,” which became a knock-out competition.

This year a "Black and White" theme was introduced,” which was enthusiastically embraced by judges, stewards and exhibitors. Once into the knockout rounds, the two dogs stood in front of either a black banner or a white banner and three judges had a black or a white paddle to hold up to indicate their choice. Exhibitors and spectators were excited to know instantaneously which dog was proceeding to the next round, and responded with much clapping and cheering.

Judges cropped webMystery judges this year were Connie Redhead (SA), Ashley Reid (Vic), Ray Greer (NZ), Sandy Reeve (NSW), Marie Patten (NSW), Diana Fenton (NSW), Beverly Daines (NSW), Sue Rose (NSW) and John Sheppard (NSW). They were supported by MC Don Day and very capable stewards Stephen Oliver, Christina Rafton, Bruce Hickey, Ted Pickering, Marlene Sheppard and Tony Tau.

Many exhibitors also took the opportunity to have a commemorative photo taken of their dog on the podium in the photography tent, as well as enjoying the hospitality provided by the Committee at the ‘Black & White Lolly Table’ and the refreshment trolleys that circulated during the dinner break.

The winners of Show Dog, Puppy & Neuter of the Year were presented with magnificent framed rosettes, cash prizes from the Committee and an array of trophies from our sponsors. Dogs NSW major sponsor, Royal Canin, was joined by Bowral Vet Hospital, Ozentries, Dog News Australia, Dogs NSW Journal, Marellen Show Ribbons, Love’em, Cabal Canine Candids, Ffire Photography, It Suits Me, Alpha Dog Beds, Delete, Woofer Wares and the Fox Terrier Club of NSW. We thank each and every one of our sponsors for their generosity, which helps to make an awesome prize selection for our winners as well as those which are Runner-up & Semi-Finalists.
