Like many other Dogs NSW members, breeder Lesley Shirley and her English Setter do fantastic work teaching kids about safety around dogs and responsible pet ownership, as part of the NSW Government's Living Safely with Pets program.

Dural pre-school children have had a hands on lesson about pet safety with the help of a friendly English Setter.

Lesley Shirley and her dog visited Fit Kidz learning centre at Dural North as part of the NSW Government’s Living Safely With Pets program, which educates pre-school and primary children and their parents about responsible pet ownership.

Hornsby Advocate 5 10 17 3 webMrs Shirley, a program instructor and Dogs NSW registered breeder, said she enjoyed the satisfaction of seeing children become more confident around dogs.

“We go to quite a few schools where kids aren’t used to dogs... and when you see children who are so scared or who have never seen a dog before, where they come up and pat the dog... it’s the look on their faces,” she said.

“Dogs seem to know to be calm around children.”

Fit Kidz Learning Centre Dural North director Kim Hogan said she was impressed with the program.
