Before choosing your puppy, take the time to visit several breeders and gather as much information as possible.

You can:

  • Contact your local breed club for breeder recommendations.

  • Browse the DOGS NSW Breeders Directory to find registered breeders in your area.

What to Look for During Your Visit

Healthy Environment

  • Clean, well-maintained living areas

  • Healthy, happy adult dogs

  • Puppies that are clean, lively, friendly and well socialised

Meet the Parents

Responsible breeders should:

  • Introduce you to the mother (dam)

  • Show other related dogs where possible

  • Provide photos or contact details for the father (sire) if he lives elsewhere

Responsible Breeding Practices

A responsible breeder will:

  • Answer your questions honestly

  • Explain the breed's characteristics and temperament

  • Discuss both the advantages and challenges of the breed

  • Help you choose the right puppy

  • Provide ongoing support after your puppy goes home

Taking Your Puppy Home

Puppies should remain with their mother and breeder until at least 8 weeks of age.

Before collecting your puppy, you should receive:

  • Vaccination records

  • Registration certificate

  • Pedigree documentation

  • Microchip details (required by NSW legislation)

  • Puppy care guide

  • Diet information

Questions to ask a breeder

Consider asking:

  • Can we visit before deciding on our breed?

  • Why did you choose this breed?

  • How long have you been breeding?

  • Do you have other breeds or litters available?

  • Can you recommend another breeder if no puppies are available?

  • Can we visit the litter before choosing our puppy?

  • Can we meet the dam, sire or other family members?

  • Can we see the puppies together as a litter?

  • When can the puppy come home?

  • When are puppies wormed, vaccinated and microchipped?

  • Are the puppies registered with DOGS NSW?

  • Are there hereditary health conditions in the breed?

  • Do you health test your breeding dogs?

  • Can we have our own vet examine the puppy?

  • What happens if unexpected health issues arise?

Puppy Scammers

Unfortunately, puppy scams are becoming increasingly common.

Scammers often:

  • Advertise on online marketplaces

  • Use attractive puppy photos

  • Ask for deposits before you've met the breeder

  • Avoid phone calls or in-person meetings

Always:

  • Speak directly with the breeder.

  • Visit where possible.

  • Ask plenty of questions.

  • Seek advice from a DOGS NSW Breed Club before committing.

Report a Puppy Scam

If you believe you've encountered a puppy scam, report it through Scamwatch.

Please note the breeders who appear on the DOGS NSW website are merely breeders that DOGS NSW understands may have litters for sale. DOGS NSW makes no representations as to the reputation of any breeder or as to the soundness or suitability of any puppy you may decide to acquire from any breeder.
