Australia’s working dog royalty will take centre stage once again this Spring as The Great Cattle Dog Muster rolls into Muswellbrook for a weekend of wagging tails, elite competition, and outback pride.

Held at the birthplace of the Australian Cattle Dog and the Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog, this one-of-a-kind event celebrates our true-blue canine heritage through a packed schedule of conformation shows, dog sport trials, and fun for the whole family.

A Showcase of Breed Excellence

Two major dog shows will headline the weekend:

Saturday 6 September – The Great Cattle Dog Muster Championship Shows
Hosted by the Muswellbrook Chamber of Commerce and Industry, this specialty event will feature classes for both Australian Cattle Dogs and Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog, with judging from experienced all-breeds and specialty Judges. Property classes such as Best Gait, Best Coat, Best Feet and Sire and Progeny will shine a spotlight on the attributes that make these dogs exceptional.

Sunday 7 September – Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog Club of NSW Inc Championship Show and The Australian Cattle Dog Society of NSW Inc Championship Show
A dedicated day for the Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog, experienced Working Dog Judge Mr Dean Freshwater, will honour the unique traits of Australia’s oldest recognised herding breed. With classes from Baby Puppy to Neuter plus Property awards, this is the national stage for breeders, owners, and lovers of the Stumpy.

🎪 Festival events are on Saturday 6 September only. Sunday is reserved for dog show participants and has no public programming.

Obedience, Rally & Trick Dog Trials
Alongside the conformation excitement, dog sport trials will be held across both days. Open to Australian Cattle Dogs, Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dogs, Kelpies, and Border Collies on Main, Sporting or Associate Registers, the trials include:

Saturday 6 September – Judging from 10:00am
Sunday 7 September – Judging from 9:30am

Classes include:
• Obedience: CCD, CD, CDX, UD, UDX
• Rally: RN, RA, RE, RM
• Trick Dog: TKS, TKN, TKI, TKA

Whether you’re competing for a title or spectating, it’s an incredible display of teamwork and training.
What makes this event truly special is that it’s part of the larger Great Cattle Dog Muster festival, featuring:
• Street parade and community festival (Sat 6 Sept)
• Live music headlined by Australian artists
• Markets, kids' activities and cultural entertainment
• Cattle dog demonstrations showcasing working dog skills

There’s no better time to explore the Upper Hunter region, meet passionate breeders and dog sport competitors, and soak in the Aussie spirit.
