The NEW Pet Registry - from 2 July 2024
21-06-2024
The NSW Government’s Department of Local Government Pet Registry have been working on re-writing the current system for many years as ever increasing errors and user issues have meant the system was not working as was intended, i.e. making the online microchip and lifetime registration of companion animals seamless.

After many years the new Pet Registry is ready to launch Stage 1 of the upgrade to the Owner & Breeder Portal. Stages 2 to 5 will roll out between September 2024 for Stage 2 through to March 2026 for Stage 5. The future planned stages are:

•    Stage 2 – Council & Ranger Portal – September 2024
•    Stage 3 – Vet Portal = Mid 2025
•    Stage 4 – Shelter, Pound & Rehoming Portal – December 2025
•    Stage 5 – Welfare Agency Portal – March 2026

Significant changes to the Pet Registry now have tighter controls and improved functionality for breeders and new owners. Some of the changes now bring changes to the Companion Animals Regulation 2018 (legislation that is in support of the Companion Animals Act 1998) into action.

From 2nd July 2024, when the New Pet Registry is enabled, the major following changes are:
  • All puppies and kittens must be (Lifetime) Registered by 12 weeks of age or upon transfer, whichever happens first
  • Pets sold or given away before 12 weeks of age MUST be registered immediately by the owners upon receiving ownership
  • Late registration, after 12 weeks of age, will automatically incur a fine
  • Transfers to new owners is immediate (including interstate and overseas owners), no more requirement for new owner to claim the pet
  • Transfers to interstate or overseas owners do not need a Service NSW or Pet Registry accounts
  • SMS and email notifications are sent to owners and breeders to make them aware of obligations re desexing, breeder discount of fees etc
There are other functions now built into the new Pet Registry. The basics can be viewed here which were in the recent Webinar run by the Pet Registry team.

Some functions still are not built into the new system, so breeders will still need to present to their Local Council to provide documentation to support the breeder discount being claimed.
